Independence
The green Independence section of our curriculum wheel focusses on developing our students' Daily Living Skills, providing work experience opportunities within Endeavour and out in the local community which may incorporate travel training. This section also acknowledges the importance of our young people being part of their community and having opportunities to engage in their own interests and leisure activities.
Activities
We offer a range of activities including:
- Daily living skills include shopping, cooking, cleaning and laundry to develop the skills they need as they move into adulthood and transition out of Endeavour onto college, supported living or residential establishments.
- Work experience is based on the student's interest within our Career pathways. It starts with work-related tasks in class, like cleaning the table after lunch, vacuuming and helping with the laundry. These are developed within Endeavour with support from key staff, including preparing and serving snacks with our Hub lead, creating posters with the Admin and litter picking with the Facilities team. Post 16 students are given the opportunity to use these skills in work experience opportunities in the local community, including Farmability, Vana Farm and at Barton Larder Café.
- Fire brigade visits are a highlight of our year, giving the students an opportunity to learn about the role of a firefighter. They always enjoy trying on the safety equipment and, more excitingly, sitting in the fire engine and using the water hose.
- Leisure activities vary depending on the individual student's interests but may include art, crafts like sewing and jewellery making, reading in our library, dancing or trampolining.
This section of our curriculum provides the skills our students need to work towards ASDAN 'Towards Independence' modules. It also teaches them about different careers and incorporates our Career Pathways. It also provides opportunities for students to be part of the local community.
